Our full panel of speakers is confirmed as:
Derek Tierney, Secretary General – Department of Health
Derek Tierney was appointed as Secretary General at the Department of Health by the Minister for Health in April of this year. Prior to this, he held the role of Assistant Secretary General where he led out on Health Infrastructure, advancing Digital Health and the coordination of the Sláintecare Reform agenda. Prior to that he served as Programme Director in the Government’s Covid-19 Vaccination Taskforce. He has held senior roles across the Justice and Transport sectors and central Government with responsibility for large scale programmes, reform delivery, system governance and whole of Government responses. Before moving into the Civil Service, he has also held senior roles in a commercial transport semi state and the private sector working in pharmaceutical, computer and telecoms industries.
Prof Alan Smeaton, Professor of Computing – Dublin City University
Alan Smeaton is Professor of Computing at Dublin City University and a distinguished and award-winning researcher in artificial intelligence and data analytics.
He is a member of the board of Oifig IS na hÉireann / AI Office of Ireland, a Ministerial appointment to direct Ireland’s central AI coordinating authority, overseeing national governance and responsible innovation under the EU AI Act. Prior to that Alan was a member of the Government’s AI Advisory Council (2024 – 2026) where he advised Government Departments and public agencies, helping to demystify AI.
Dr Guido Giunti, Chief Data Officer – St James’s Hospital
Guido Giunti is a medical doctor specialised in digital health solutions for chronic care. He has worked in academic, clinical, and industrial settings at top organisations in Europe. His work has received numerous awards, including a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellowship, the Best Doctoral Dissertation award in his field, and recognition as one of Finland’s top healthcare innovators by the medical magazine Mediuutiset. In 2024, Guido received the Changemaker in Health and Global Patient Innovator award by HIMSS. He is Adjunct Professor at Trinity College Dublin and the University of Oulu in Finland and is currently Chief Data Officer at St James’s Hospital, where he leads the hospital’s data strategy, governance, and innovation to advance patient care, research, and operational excellence.
Dr Mary Coghlan, Partner, AI & Data Lead – EY Ireland
Mary’s focus is the provision of a range of AI, data and analytics services to clients across the health ecosystem and the growth of the health business.
She helps health organisations design and implement data strategies that support the crucial challenges that they encounter. Mary is deeply interested in the use of advanced health analytics to support better health outcomes for populations. Her depth of past experience in healthcare delivery and analytics mean she is ideally positioned in her role.
Mary has a BA in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Oxford, is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland and has a medical degree (MB, BCH, BAO) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She is also a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland.
